Illinois Circuit Breaker forms (Taxes)

Illinois Circuit Breaker forms used to be distrubuted by the Illinois Department of Revenue and the Library used to receive the forms with other tax forms. At this date the Library does not have paper copies of the forms.

The forms are now handled by the Illinois Department of Aging: (http://www.cbrx.il.gov/), and the forms are avaiable online.

Historical Census Browser (Internet Sites)

A patron recently asked about the slave population of the US from the Colonial period through the Civil War. The Historical Census Browser from the University of Virginia Library helped answer his question-- it also offers statistics and comparisons for U.S. General Population, Education & Literacy, Economy/Manufacturing/Employment, Ethnicity/Race/Place of Birth, Agriculture, and Slave population for every 10 years beginning in 1790. Results can be displayed in mutli-year charts and can also be mapped.

Avian Flu (Internet Sites)

The CDC offers information on influenza which includes Key Facts About Avian Influenza; the World Health Organization's Global Influenza Programme offers an excellent site on planning for an influenza pandemic (including Ten things you need to know about pandemic influenza). For a good listing of other online resources, see the Librarian's Index to the Internet influenza page. And for info closer to home, The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America offers a flu shot finder.

Worker's Compensation (Internet Sites)

Worker's Comp claims can be accessed online, but there are limits. Only active claims can be accessed online, not previous or resolved cases. Also, cases can be accessed online only by case number-- to access a case by claimant's name, the searcher must physically visit the Commission office (for Chicago, 100 W. Randolph, #8-200, 312-814-6611). That said, claims can be accessed at neonwebk.cmcf.state.il.us/iic/icdw. General information is avaiable at the Illinois Worker's Compensation Commission website (www.iwcc.il.gov).

Summer Events: Local & Worldwide (Internet Sites)

The pilot of this pilot program will be going on vacation for a few weeks, so there'll be no posts during that time. With vacation in mind though, we'd like to bring to your attention WhatsOnWhen, the "mother of all travel and entertainment calendars." Search for leisure events, business events, and watch travel videos (including footage of the Finnish wife carrying championships and Seville's Feria d'Abril).

We found this site featured on one of our favorite resources, Gary Price's Resource Shelf.

Historical Chicago Tribune (1890-1984) (Library Databases)

Want a copy of the front page of the Chicago Tribune from the day you were born (or an image of any page or article from that newspaper)? Assuming you were born between 1890 and 1982, the Library's Historical Chicago Tribune database can meet your needs. The database offers full page and article images (not just text!) and is searchable. The only caveat-- the database can only be used in the Library (where our librarians will be more than happy to help you with your search).

Note that the database will eventually cover the years 1890-1984.
