I’ve had a lot of readers recommend Phillips for her contemporary romances so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I’ve since found out I selected the wrong book. I mean, really, who would set a romance in a rundown traveling circus?
Daisy is a twenty-something without any real life experience. Raised by her fashion model and party-girl mother, Daisy has never had to do any serious work in her life. When she gets into some trouble, her father gives her an ultimatum: either marry the man he chooses for her, or bear the consequences of her actions. The man he chooses for her works for a circus and lives in a dirty broken-down trailer which must be moved every day to keep up with the circus bookings. So if the guy was just a regular guy, it wouldn’t be such a terrible premise despite the bizarre setting. Unfortunately, he’s not nice to Daisy at all; he’s pretty creepy actually, and if he would have just taken one minute to explain some things to Daisy as they occurred, the story would have made more sense and they would have all been much happier.
Now that I know I’ve just chosen the wrong Phillips novel I promise I’ll try again…just not right away.
